What Nichiren Shonin said in this letter is that we should get rid of own egoistic desire to seek salvation for ourselves and own parents only, while there are so many others who also need to be saved. The Lotus Sutra, however, holds great merit for even for the selfish Mokuren, who only sought his mother’s salvation, to attain Buddhahood. The Lotus Sutra is salvation for all, old and young, wise and ignorant, men and women, and good and bad.

Let us remind ourselves of the great merit of the Lotus Sutra as we chant Odaimoku, Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.
